2024-1-LV01-KA121-SCH000222380

Job shadowing at Tallinn Kadriori German Gymnasium

  • Deputy Director and mathematics teacher Inga Riekstiņa
  • English teachers Rudīte Timmermane and Gunta Tropa
  • Social studies and Economics teacher Ieva Ergle
  • Biology teacher Arnis Dauksts
  • Physics teacher Toms Krūmiņš

From 2 to 4 April, six teachers from Riga State German Grammar School took part in a work shadowing mobility at Kadrioru Saksa Grammar School in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, as part of the Erasmus+ project.

During the visit, the teachers got acquainted with the Estonian education system and visited the Kadrioru Museum, which works closely with the school to support the learning process. They had the opportunity to observe lessons and learn about the pedagogical approach of Kadriori Sax Grammar School.

This was a valuable experience - not only did they gain a new understanding of the educational process in the neighbouring country, but also a very good cooperation was established, Estonian colleagues have already been hosted for a job shadowing mobility at the grammar school from 14-16 May and planning for the next projects has started.

Teacher mobility to Xanten (Germany) 28.03. - 02.04.2025.

2024-1-LV01-KA121-SCH000222380

Job shadowing at the Grammar School in Xanten

Participant: Māris Apsītis (English teacher)

Aim: To gain work experience in an educational institution in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Objectives:

  1. To get to know the specifics of the German education system;
  2. To experience lessons in a gymnasium in Xanten;
  3. To get to know classroom management and methodological techniques;
  4. To discuss with German colleagues the possibilities of digitising learning;
  5. To analyse the role of the teacher in the lesson.

The teacher observed several lessons in English, participated in discussions with teachers and the school principal to better understand the specificities of the German education system, and explored cultural and historical sites of importance for both the region and the country. Meetings with Grammar School teachers helped to compare, summarise and analyse commonalities and differences in the organisation, management and assessment of the learning process.

Findings:

  • The job shadowing mobility provided an opportunity to improve English language skills by discussing current issues in education, society and culture with German colleagues.
  • Observing the lessons and the discussions afterwards helped to get to know the daily life in a German educational institution, to see the similarities and differences in the education systems of both countries.
  • The experience gained allowed to critically evaluate our methodological approaches, to gain new ideas and to analyse the possibilities of using them in our work.
